Our TURBO HEPA series backpacks give the homeowner the same performance and durability given to the commercial backpack user with an added touch of convenience and flexibility. The XP-3 Whisper TURBO HEPA adds certain efficiencies that are lacking in full commercial models when used in the home. Unlike other backpack brands, our commercial and residential models both get the same high performance motor and are built of the same quality materials.
The XP-3 Whisper Raven TURBO HEPA 74-5003 is a customized model of backpack brought together by the vacuum professionals at Vacdepot. Starting with the base XP-3 Whisper Raven backpack from Sandia, Vacdepot packs this residential version with our own custom tool set and accessories from the world's best manufacturers. We know the tools and attachments that work well for commercial cleaning of restaurants and warehouses are not so wonderful when you try to use them in the living room. Our goal was to find attachments more suited to use in the home or small office that are easy to use, well designed and also match the performance and style of the XP-3 Whisper backpack. The result of years in design and production: The Sandia XP-3 Whisper Raven 6 Quart backpack vacuums. Technologically advanced vacuums with the durability you expect from industrial cleaning products. Committed to continually innovate better products with new designs and better performance, the Vacdepot Special Edition Raven Backpack vacuums' designs make good sense, and good value for demanding cleaning applications.

Quality assurance is part of every machine built by Sandia Plastics, and your satisfaction is guaranteed with each purchase from Vacdepot.
For many years, HEPA has been used as a standard measurement for filtration in hospital operating rooms and in laboratories where contamination is of extreme concern. The goal of HEPA filtration is to capture and retain as many contaminant particles from the air as possible. Recently, as individuals have become more concerned with air pollution in their homes and workplaces, HEPA has become a phrase to look for on packaging of air filters and vacuum cleaners used in homes and offices.
Sandia's approach to HEPA filtration is to divide up the filtration burden into many stages, thus extending the life of the actual HEPA final filter many times that of standard HEPA vacuums. The standard 1 layer paper bag is replaced in all Sandia vacuums with the double layer Micro-Filter bags with melt-blown liner to capture smaller particles. The cloth filter provides additional filtration down to 1 micron in size, along with supporting the disposable paper bag. The dome shaped HEPA filter replaces the standard foam filter under the bag, providing the HEPA level of filtration after the larger particles have already been captured in the system.
Cleaning the air before it enters the motor also extends the life of the suction motor by preventing dust build-up on the fan blades. Finally, the cleaned air is exhausted through the dual cell noise filter into the environment where it is likely 2 - 10 times cleaner than the air in the room. The high surface area of the HEPA filter ensures a long life, and in most residential applications will last up to 1 year. Even with heavy commercial usage the pleated HEPA filter will last 6 months or more. The HEPA filter comes preinstalled on the HEPA Raven and a second HEPA filter is included free of charge with all HEPA backpack vacuums from Vacdepot.com, a $15.99 Value! With a free second HEPA filter you need only replace the bags as you fill them for HEPA filtration for up to 2 years. Sandias' HEPA filtration system is excellent for allergy sufferers or when your cleaning requires you to capture small particles including small amounts of drywall dust or ash. The Sandia XP-3 Whisper HEPA vacuum ARE NOT RECOMMENDED for critical filtration applications including mold remediation, asbestos removal or lead paint abatement. Those critical filtration needs will require the use of a ULPA filtration system and OSHA devices listed for critical contaminate cleanup.
Sandia is the only backpack manufacturer to use the double fan motor in a backpack, making the XP-3 Whisper 6 a quiet lightweight backpack that works better in sound sensitive areas, including the home, than other brands and styles of vacuums.
The 115923 Ametek motor is not only one of the best performers in its class, it is also one of the strongest built styles Ametek makes. The 115923 is an all metal motor with a cast aluminum base plate and commutator end frame. Both ends of the armature have sealed 8mm ball bearings and the twin precision aluminum impellers are crowned with steel covers for protection and stability. The same motor is also used in expensive consumer vacuums that retail for over a thousand dollars and is respected in the industry as a top performer.
In a vacuum cleaner, particularly those that must pull the debris through a hose or tube, it is a combination of CFM and Suction that does the cleaning, and AirWatts is a measure that can be helpful in finding a powerful vacuum cleaner motor. Another important measure of a vacuum motor is its normal operating speed. A vacuum motor's RPM is strongly tied to its longevity. As with any motor that you would like to last longer, slower is better. The XP-3 Whisper double fan system allows the motor to get more work done with fewer rotations per minute. Aside from the increased motor life are also less heat generation and lower noise, both great for vacuum and user alike.
If that was all Sandia did to increase the airflow of their vacuum it would be a great machine: comparable to, or better than, any other backpack vacuum on the market. However - Sandia's commitment to the single most important aspect of a vacuum's performance goes far beyond a high performance motor, it is at the very core of the Raven's design.
In a conventional cylindrical backpack vacuum when the bottom of the bag fills with dirt, the air begins to travel through the sides of the bag and down to the motor. As the bag grows in size filling with debris, it contacts the sides of the bag housing and top of the motor effectively "cutting off" the path of least resistance, and the air must once again travel through the dirt slower and slower as the bag fills up. Slower air through the motor means slower air through the tool and less pick up performance - all leading to more time cleaning. We have all experienced poor performance in vacuums due to full bags cutting off the suction. In a backpack vacuum this is made even more critical by the top-fill / motor under design. A full and sagging bag can dramatically cut off airflow as it seals off the motor from incoming air.
Adding to the high airflow efficiency the HEPA filter is dome shaped to prevent the bag from sealing against the motor as in regular flat filter machines allowing a more consistent airflow. This single design advantage alone allows Sandia to offer a 5 year motor warranty on all backpack vacuums because the motor runs cooler. Heat is not only the number one vacuum motor killer, it also makes the vacuum run louder and less efficiently making it uncomfortable to use. The HEPA Raven runs cooler, quieter and more efficiently than other brands of HEPA backpack vacuums with similar performance. If the tapered design is superior why are other backpacks cylindrical? The old round backpacks were the first design because they were easy to build, literally a piece of PVC tube with a motor glued in one end, a cap with hose on the other and a harness riveted into the middle of it. They were a simple design that was easy and cheap to manufacture. Sandia broke the trend of tubular backpack design with its unique hex shape and built in contoured backrest for both added performance and comfort.
Next they designed a special filter; a filter not for dirt, but for noise. The Dual Cell Noise Filter included on Sandia's backpacks features air control channels cut from open cell foam with large pore capacity to diffuse the exhausting air and sound from the high air-flow motor.
Just like a muffler on an automobile, the Dual Cell Noise Filter breaks the air into many streams, changing the direction of the airflow column and blocking the exhausting motor noise in the process. The Dual Cell Noise Filter press-fits into the bottom of the vacuum on top of the motor protection plate, which keeps the filter from entering the motor's spinning armature. It is easy to remove if needed, and can be rinsed in the sink with tap water if it should collect any fine particulate. Further fine tuning the vacuum to reduce noise, Sandia went about eliminating extra parts and pieces that can vibrate and make noise. An effort was also made to build the vacuum of noise insulating materials and to gasket parts of dissimilar materials so they cannot rub together.
Contoured to fit the natural curve of a human back, the molded backrest coupled with the quiet design makes the Whisper Raven comfortable to use even over long cleaning sessions. Flared and tilted at the hip, the Whisper Raven's backrest puts the weight on your larger leg muscles and not on your upper back. A built-in closed cell foam cushion keeps hard plastic plates off your back, and the open air space inside the backrest provides distance between you and the heat of the machine. Sandia also molded a carry handle in the top of the backrest that doubles as a cord hanger when the vacuum is not in use.
The left side of the waist strap has three elastic loops to hold the crevice tool, dusting brush and upholstery nozzle for quick conversion to above-the-floor cleaning. The Sandia backpack harness system has no bolts to fall off, no spacers crack and break. Simplicity in this design not only makes for a more durable vacuum, but a more user friendly one too.
The lid of the Whisper Raven 6 features a plug-in straight cuff connection. The tapered connection provides a positive lock between the hose and vacuum, eliminating separation of the hose while you're cleaning. The Raven 6 lid is a quick connection 1/4 screw top that is easy to remove and simple to reinstall with oversize thread connectors and a single piece design that is lightweight and durable. With no latches to wear out the screw top design will last the life of the machine and provides a positive seal each time a new bag is installed. The hose is removable from the lid, making storage and transportation easier as well.
Controlling the XP-3 Whisper Raven is simple with a single power switch. The on/off switch is recessed into the lower flange of the backrest where it cannot be bumped off by accident and is still easy to reach when needed. The entire vacuum housing is composed of only 3 parts, all of which are made of rotationally molded polyethylene. This same material has served Igloo© cooler company well for years and works even better for Sandia, making the vacuum body lightweight and nearly indestructible. Built for heavy use, Sandia designed this vacuum to take tough service with little maintenance.
The Whisper Raven 6 hose has a vinyl connector that friction fits into the tapered cap. Our TURBO series hose is 5 foot in length, a perfect fit for backpack users of any size. The hose material is a durable smooth bore with a soft outer threaded design with rounded edges that do not scratch or pinch while you're wearing the vacuum. The hose tool end, or Bent Control Tube, has a threaded swivel cuff that keeps your tools from getting tangled while you clean. The bent control tube is 15" in length, made from durable chromed steel, has a standard friction fit that is easy to use and a three position suction regulator. All above the floor cleaning tools can be used directly on the bent control tube or at the end of the telescopic extension wand. The friction fit makes for quick mount & dismount with no latches or pins to break.
The new telescopic wand is color matched black with the other tools in the kit and adjust fully from 22 inches to 39 inches in 1 inch increments. The latching mechanism is a positive ratchet giving a firmer lock into the desired height allowing the tool to be resized on the fly for the user. The latching system is internally sealed from the dirt control tube for perfect air-flow with no catches and the hose end features nylon collar for quick and easy connections. Imagine cleaning stairs with a compressed wand that does not require you to hold your arm up to vacuum - less fatigue and much safer. Cleaning overhead is also easier due to the lower weight, comparable to plastic with 10 times the strength.
The cleaning face has been shaped for the way people clean, with a five inch cleaning depth and a 1.5 inch protected opening. The elongated service end of the tool has nearly twice the cleaning area of standard dusting brushes, letting the user do more work in a single pass. The top of the Ultimate Dust Brush is also tapered and the bristles are swept forward letting you clean into corners and reach areas inaccessible to other tools, and the suction opening is tapered so suction is evenly distributed the whole length of the tool.
Our unique crevice tool is 13" (330mm) long with flat profile and slots for those "hard-to-reach" corners and crevices where dust and debris can hide. Slots provide additional airflow along the cleaning surface underneath furniture and cabinets. Made of textured ABS plastic the crevice tool is strong enough to take abuse but also just a bit flexible to keep it from breaking. All the above the floor cleaning tools can store directly on the backpack's harness in elastic loops to keep them close at hand. The XP-3 Whisper TURBO differs from our standard HAUS model in the style of floor tools included with the vacuum. The 74-5003 TURBO HEPA model gives you two tools for cleaning floors, one dedicated to carpets and rugs, the other strictly for hard floors. The advantage is better cleaning, particularly on carpeted surfaces with the Wessel-Werk TK280 Turbo Carpet Brush.
Of a unique design, the Wessel-Werk Turbo Brush is actually effective on both textile and hard floor coverings. The all-purpose design includes four soft roller wheels and PVC air control wiper blade that allows scratch free use on even delicate floors. On carpeted surfaces the brush roller provides gentle grooming action that moves fibers and spreads them apart allowing the suction to penetrate deeper into the carpet. The spinning brush also provide a sweeping action the quickly and efficiently moves debris into the suction inlet where it is carried into the Premiums bag.
Powerful and through brushing action are thanks to an efficient turbine drive. A double fin offset row of blades insures consistent performance at all levels of airflow. The brushes turbine is suspended on bearings to give a smooth transfer of power to the belt. The belt is geared and offers a positive drive without tension. The geared belt is also centered in the nozzle and enclosed to prevent debris from becoming entangled in the Turbo Brush. The unique layout of the bristles provides augured movement of the debris along the nozzle from either side to the center mounted funnel shaped intake.
The larger rear wheels provide transition of the users forward movement though the tool so the bottom of the nozzle does not drag on the floor causing resistance and increasing the effort required to clean.
The front and rear wheels are both made of a softer rubberized material to protect hard floors and give good tracking. Both wheel sets also run on chromed steel axels for long wear, however the rear wheels use hardened centered hub for extended wear resistance as they are the point in the nozzle that is most subject to the users power and control. Using the TK280 Turbo Brush transforms the standard XP-3 Whisper back pack vacuum for hard floors to a machine capable of caring for small areas of carpets and throw rugs, even for homes with pets and their sometimes troublesome clingy fur.
Effortlessly negotiating over uneven surfaces without the risk of damage to expensive finishes like polished stone or hardwood floors, the floor brush has no exposed metal components and features two outboard roller wheels to assist in movement over transitional areas.
Unlike conventional upright or canister vacuums, Sandia backpack vacuums use external power cord extensions for providing electricity from a standard 120V wall outlet to the vacuum. Each vacuum comes equipped with a 12-inch pigtail cord attached at the base with a compression style flexible cord nut. The short cord adds to the mobility when moving the vacuum from one job site to another but more importantly promotes reliability of the main vacuum by making a common problem of all vacuums external.
The Cold Flex© compound power cord also adds to the usability of the XP-3 Whisper backpack with excellent flexibility, 30% - 50% more flexible than standard vinyl compound orange cords, and superior abrasion resistance. The Cold Flex power cable is ready to clean when you are and remains flexible in any weather. In freezing weather the cord will not crack in down to -58°, and will not deform in temperatures up to 140°. The Cold Flex outer cover is SJTW rated, designed to meet OSHA specification, UL, C-UL and CSA listed and features excellent abrasion resistance for extended usage without wear. The Cold Flex cord is blue in color which more closely matches the equipment colors and also does not show dirt as easily. Both plug ends of the Cold Flex are solid and molded directly into the cord jacket for excellent durability.
The 74-5001 XP-3 Whisper Raven 6 TURBO is premium backpack model for residential cleaning with enhanced filtration. This model, as are all models in the HAUS and TURBO series, is centered on providing the right tools for residential cleaning applications and the special tasks that home vacuums are often asked to perform. Our many years experience in backpack vacuum sales at Vacdepot has led us to couple the excellent Sandia XP-3 Whisper suction body with the best tools and attachments for the home user. All of the XP-3's components are matched with one another, and the entire unit is matched with the job it is to do in the home. Who should not use a back pack style vacuum cleaner? Backpack vacuums are best suited to cleaning applications where it will be operated in a continuous block of use. The exceptional mobility of backpack vacuums with over 100' of cleaning reach is most efficiently used when all vacuuming is done at once. If your cleaning application or method requires you to frequently stop to perform other task, then return to vacuuming off and on during a cleaning session then the action of mounting and dismounting the back pack will negate the efficiency gain of cleaning with a back pack vacuum. Also, those whom must clean in tight and restrictive spaces may sometimes have trouble using backpack vacuums. And despite their low weight, users with back problems should not use a back pack vacuum. In some cases using a HIPVAC such as the Sandia HIPSTER may work in applications where the full size XP-3 back pack can not.
Vacdepot also offers the HAUS series for light duty or special application commercial work or residential usage. Special order 400Hz models are also available for cleaning cruise ships and aircraft with special power requirements. Along with the many advantages of using a backpack vacuum in your business or home, like faster and more effective cleaning, the Sandia XP-3 Whisper Raven 6 adds many unique features not found in other products. Backpacks have gone from a cleaning concept to an indispensable tool in the cleaning arsenal, and the Sandia Whisper Raven expands on the advantage of user and machine as one with a vacuum that provides maximum value, minimum noise.
